About Us

Born from a conversation, not a boardroom.

Diabetes Pantry Project started the way a lot of good ideas do — with volunteers listening. At food pantries across Los Angeles, the same concern kept coming up from clients managing diabetes: the shelves were stocked, but not with much they could safely eat.

Diabetes management depends on consistent access to the right foods — lean proteins, whole grains, low-sugar staples — and for families already stretched thin, that access can't depend on what happens to be donated that week. So we set out to build the connection ourselves: matching food companies that make diabetes-friendly, shelf-stable products with the pantries whose clients need them most.

Our long-term goal isn't a one-time food drive. It's sustainable partnerships — food companies and pantries working together on an ongoing basis — paired, over time, with practical education so that the food we help deliver actually gets used.

Our approach

We start by listening.

Every partnership we build traces back to a need a pantry told us about directly.

We keep it usable.

Food alone isn't the whole answer — we pair donations with simple, real-world guidance.

We meet people where they are.

Culturally, practically, and without judgment about how anyone eats.

We build for the long run.

Our goal is lasting partnerships, not one-time drives.

A note from our founder

"I'm a medical student at UCLA, and this project didn't start in a classroom — it started at a food pantry, listening to someone explain that they'd been told to manage their diabetes carefully, and then handed groceries that made that nearly impossible. That gap between what people are told to do for their health and what's actually available to them has stayed with me. Diabetes Pantry Project is my attempt to close a small piece of that gap here in Los Angeles, one partnership at a time."
